Motivational Interviewing in Health Care: Helping Patients Change Behavior (Applications of
Motivational Interviewing) by Stephen Rollick, William R. Miller, Christopher C. Butler.
This is an excellent resource for the practical application of MI techniques for behavioral
change. It is filled with dialogue examples to help physicians and all providers learn new skills to
help patients change their behavior by assisting their patients to discover their own motivation
for doing so. It helps the provider become less of a preacher and more of a coach. The book
presents a rational approach to motivational interviewing and uses examples with smoking
cessation, weight loss, medication adherence etc. - areas all providers struggle with in the busy
offices of primary care.
I highly recommend it.
